Sunday celebrates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, beginning the
last week of His Earthly life. The crowds came out and proclaimed Him
to be King. Yet only a few days later they called for His death. This
morning we consider what it meant for them to proclaim Him King and more
importantly what does it mean when we do?

(John
12:12-19) The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast
heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches
and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!” "Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!" 14 Jesus
found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, 15 "Do not be
afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a
donkey's colt." 16 At first his disciples did not understand all this.
Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had
been written about him and that they had done these things to him. 17
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and
raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people,
because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out
to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is
getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"

(Matthew 21:1-11) As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage
on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, "Go
to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied
there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If
anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he
will send them right away." 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken
through the prophet: 5 "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king
comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a
donkey.'" 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7
They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and
Jesus sat on them. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road,
while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9
The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
"Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of
the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!" 10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem,
the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?" 11 The crowds
answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."

(Mark
11:8-11 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others
spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and
those who followed shouted, "Hosanna! " "Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord!" 10 "Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father
David!" "Hosanna in the highest!" 11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to
the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already
late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

(Luke
19:37-44) When he came near the place where the road goes down the
Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise
God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38 "Blessed is
the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory
in the highest!" 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus,
"Teacher, rebuke your disciples!" 40 "I tell you," he replied, "if they
keep quiet, the stones will cry out."

41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42 and
said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you
peace--but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43 The days will come upon
you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle
you and hem you in on every side. 44 They will dash you to the ground,
you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on
another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to
you."

(Zechariah 9:9-10) Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout,
Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having
salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a
donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses
from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim
peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the
River to the ends of the earth.

(Revelation 11:15-17) The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there
were loud voices in heaven, which said: "The kingdom of the world has
become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for
ever and ever." 16 And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their
thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying:
"We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was,
because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign.

Digging Deeper

1.
The entry of Christ into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday is generally referred
to as the “Triumphal Entry.” It is recorded in Matthew 21:1-17; Mark
1:1-11; Luke 19:29-44 and John 12:12-19. Read each of these accounts.
Where are they different? Make a list of differences. Now see how many
ways these accounts point to Jesus as Lord, as King, as Messiah or as
Savior – how many can you list? What happened to Jesus one week later?
Why do you think the people turned on Him so quickly? What does that
teach us about our own hearts?

2.
Palm Sunday is the entrance of Jesus and the people proclaiming Him as
King (Luke 19:38). Did He come that day as King? Why or why not? Is
He King now? (Why or why not). Is He King of your life? Is it
possible for Jesus to be your Savior and not be your King? Why or why
not? Consider the following scriptures as you answer: John 3:16; 1
Timothy 6:13-16; Luke 1:31-33; Ephesians 1:18-23; 1 Peter 3:15-16; 1
John 5:10-13; Colossians 3:1-3. How are those two truths the same? How
are they different? How are they lived out in your life?

Words of Power
Having examined the power of our
words, and the impact both for causing pain and bringing healing, we
need to consider the power of God’s words. God’s words are far more
powerful than our words, because He is all powerful. That’s good news,
because God’s words speak life to those who know Him. And because He is
trustworthy and true, His words are also.

(Revelation 19:11-16)
I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose
rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes
war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns.
He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is
dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14
The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and
dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Out of his mouth comes a
sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them
with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath
of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name
written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

(John 1:1-5) In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were
made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was
life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the
darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

(John 1:14)
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his
glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of
grace and truth.

(Genesis 1:1-7) In the beginning God
created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and
empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God
was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and
there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the
light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness
he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning--the
first day. 6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters
to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated
the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so.

(2 Timothy 3:14-17)
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become
convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and
how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to
make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking,
correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may
be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

(2 Peter 1:17-21)
For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came
to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love;
with him I am well pleased." 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came
from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. 19 And we have
the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay
attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day
dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you must
understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own
interpretation. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of
man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy
Spirit.

(Matthew 3:16-17) As soon as Jesus was baptized,
he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he
saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And
a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am
well pleased."

(Romans 3:1-2) What advantage, then, is
there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? 2 Much in
every way! First of all, they have been entrusted with the very words of
God.

(John 17:15-17) My prayer is not that you take them
out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They
are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the
truth; your word is truth.

(Hebrews 4:9-13) There
remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who
enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from
his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so
that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience. 12 For
the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged
sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and
marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in
all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and
laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Digging Deeper
1.
The Bible is given many titles throughout scripture. See if you can
identify the titles or descriptions in the following passages: Matthew
22:29; Nehemiah 8:3; Ephesians 6:17; Daniel 10:21; James 1:22; Luke
11:28; romans 3:2; Psalm 1:2; revelation 22:19; Colossians 3:16;
Philippians 2:16; 2 Timothy 2:15. What does each of these titles teach
you about the Bible?

2. What does each of the following
scriptures say about the impact or the effects of God’s word? Hebrews
4:13; Luke 8:11-15; Isaiah 55:10-11; 1 Corinthians 1:18; Psalm 119:9-12;
Matthew 22:29; romans 15:4-6. What does that say about how important
they are? Does your lifestyle reflect that importance (do you read them,
memorize them, order your life upon them?)

3. Years ago some
would say: “God (the Bible) says it; I believe it; that settles it.”
What does that statement mean? Do you think we can still say that
today? Why or why not? Why do you think the Bible has “lost favor”
somewhat in our modern culture?

Life Giving Words

Last week we thought about words that are “radioactive” – that do damage to those who hear them, sometimes for years. This week we want to examine “life-giving” words – words that bring healing and wholeness to the hearers. As we have seen, words are powerful things, and our words can be instruments of healing, good news to hurting souls. In fact, God wants to us as bearers of good news, speaking life to those around us.

(Isaiah 61:1-3) The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion-- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. (Luke 4:18-19)

(Proverbs 25:25) Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.

(Romans 12:10, 15) Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above
yourselves . . . 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

(1 Thessalonians 2:11-12) For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

(Ephesians 4:29) Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

(1 Thessalonians 5:9-11) For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

(Isaiah 52:7) How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!"

(Mark 16:14-16) Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. 15 He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

(Romans 10:14-15) How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

Digging Deeper

1. Read Genesis 27. In verses 34-38 what is the cry of Esau’s heart? Think about people in your life, or even your own life, what do you long for? When blessing is given, what does that do in your heart?

2. Read Romans 12:9-21. Many of these verses directly address the things we say. The others might reflect pleasant speech as well (for example “practice hospitality” could mean simply saying “I would love to do this for you.” Read the passage again, and make a list of things we are called to say, or the ways in which we are called to speak. Make it as specific and “real world” as you can.

3. For several days, at the end of the day (perhaps when you lay down) consider the things you said and the ways you spoke that day. Are they mostly “radioactive” (hurtful) or mostly “life-giving?” Read Matthew 7:17-20 and Matthew 12:33-37. What does the pattern of your speech reflect? What is the condition of your heart? If you need to, ask God to change it.
we have seen, words have explosive power. They have the power to heal
and transform; they also have the power to wound and destroy. This
morning we spend a little time considering those words that would. What
we will see is that destructive words have the power to bring pain not
just for a little while, but for a lifetime.

(James
3:1-12) Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers,
because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We
all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says,
he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check. 3 When we put
bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the
whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large
and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder
wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of
the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is
set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of
evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the
whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7
All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being
tamed and have been tamed by man, 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It
is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise
our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in
God's likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My
brothers, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water
flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives,
or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

(Matthew 5:21-22 NIV) "You have heard that it was said to the people
long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to
judgment.' 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother
will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother,
'Raca, ' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You
fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

(Matthew
12:33-37 NIV) "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a
tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its
fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything
good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good
man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil
man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell
you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every
careless word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be
acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."

(Proverbs 15:4 NIV) The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.

(Ecclesiastes
7:20-22 NIV) There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is
right and never sins. 21 Do not pay attention to every word people say,
or you may hear your servant cursing you-- 22 for you know in your heart
that many times you yourself have cursed others.

(Revelation
12:10-11 NIV) Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have come
the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the
authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers, who accuses
them before our God day and night, has been hurled down. 11 They
overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their
testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from
death.

Digging Deeper

1.
In the Old Testament names were very important. Often names were
changed to demonstrate something that God had done or some other event.
Why are the names changed in these passages, and why is that
significant? Genesis 32:24-32; Ruth 19:19-22; Genesis 17:1-8. Read
Isaiah 65:11-15, Revelation 2:17 and 3:12. What is the significance of
the new name? Who has it? Do we have a new name? Why or why not?
What are the implications of our new name (how we think about
ourselves, how we act, etc.)?

2.
What does James mean when he says out of one mouth we speak blessings
and cursings? (James 3:8-9 – the word “praise” can also be translated
“bless”). See also Deuteronomy 30:19-20; Romans 12:14 and Luke
6:27-28. Write down five specific statements you could make that would
represent a “blessing” and five that would be a “cursing.” Which kind of
statement has more power – blessing or cursing?

3.
Can you remember a time when someone spoke radioactive words to you –
words that brought you a “curse” or harm? Do they still hurt? How
might you overcome that hurt? Hint: think about your “new name”
(question 1). Also consider how other’s words might bring healing to
that place: Proverbs 4:20-22; Proverbs 12:18; Proverbs 16:24; Ephesians
4:29.
(Luke 17:3-4 NIV) So watch yourselves. "If your brother sins, rebuke
him, and if he repents, forgive him. 4 If he sins against you seven
times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,'

Read the following verses and list the kinds of verbal actions that
are taking place (warning, encouraging, etc.). 1 Thessalonians 5:14;
Colossians 3:16; Proverbs 17:10; 2 Timothy 4:2-5. Which of those is
easiest for you? Which is hardest? Why?

2.
Often when we admonish or correct someone it does not go well. Why do
you think that is true? After thinking about that question read these
passages and see if you gain more insight into the question. James
1:19-20; Proverbs 9:8-10; Hebrews 12:6-8; 2 Timothy 4:2-5 (especially
the last part); 1 Thessalonians 5:14; Romans 12:10; Philippians 2:3-4.

3.
Which of the following is more important when you feel you need to
correct, rebuke or admonish someone: truthfulness; your motive; your
choice of words; your attitude? All are important, but how would you
rank them? Think about a time when you tried to rebuke someone and it
did not go well. Were any of those aspects lacking in your approach?
Why should we be so careful (or should we)? See Proverbs 17:28-29 and
Ephesians 4:29.

First message in the series "Sticks and Stones?"

This morning we
start a new series on the words we use and the ways that we speak.
All of us know that words are important, but we don’t always
realize how powerful they are. The Bible tells us that words have
the power of “life and death.” Do we really believe that?

Scriptures:

James 3:1-12
Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because
you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all
stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he
is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.

3 When we put bits
into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole
animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and
are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder
wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise the tongue is a small part
of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest
is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world
of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person,
sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire
by hell. 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of
the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8 but no man can
tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9 With the tongue we
praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been
made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and
cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and
salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers, can a fig tree
bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring
produce fresh water.

Mark 10:24-27 The
disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children,
how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a
camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter
the kingdom of God.” 26 The disciples were even more amazed, and
said to each other, “Who then can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at
them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all
things are possible with God.”

Mark 10: 26-27 (the
Message paraphrase) That set the disciples back on their heels. “Then
who has any chance at all?” they asked. 27 Jesus was blunt: “No
chance at all if you think you can pull it off by yourself. Every
chance in the world if you let God do it.”

1 Peter 3:8-12
Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be
sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not
repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing,
because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
10 For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his
tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. 11 He must
turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. 12
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are
attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those
who do evil.”

Proverbs 6: 16-19
There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to
him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent
blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick
to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man
who stirs up dissension among brothers.

Proverbs 18: 21 The
tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will
eat its fruit.

Digging Deeper

1. Jerry talked
about the power of our words. Do you agree with Proverbs 18:21?
That they contain "life and death?" What about "sticks
and stones my break my bones, but words will never hurt me?"
Has there ever been a time in your life when someone said something
that hurt you deeply? Proverbs 12:18 compares words to a sword. In
what ways do we (or those we know) use words like weapons? Like
healing instruments of healing?

2. Read Matthew
12:33-37, also Matthew 23:25-28. Do you agree that the things we say
reveal the condition of our heart? Why would that be true? Can you
change your speech habits without changing your heart? How would we
go about changing our heart? (Hint: Read Psalm 51:10; Ezekiel
36:25-27; 2 Corinthians 15:7). How hard is it do change the ways in
which we speak? Can we control our speech? (see James 3:1-12)? What
hope do we have? (Luke 1:37; Mark 10:26-27).

3. What can you do
if you have wounded someone with your words? Can you take them back?
Can you undo the hurt that your words may have caused? What CAN you
do? (Hint: read Matthew 5:23-24; Luke 17:3-4; Colossians 3:13; Luke
19:8 – Zacchaeus made amends, how could we do so for the hurt
caused by our words? Example: publicly apologize if the words were
stated publicly; if we told a lie go back and tell the truth - can
you think of others?)

First message in the series "Sticks and Stones?"

This morning we start a new series on the words we use and the ways that we speak. All of us know that words are important, but we don’t always realize how powerful they are. The Bible tells us
that words have the power of “life and death.” Do we really believe that?

Scriptures:

James 3:1-12 Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all
stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.

3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so
large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider
what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire,
and is itself set on fire by hell. 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless
evil, ...

As we move toward next weekend’s P3 prayer and fasting weekend, we continue
to consider how to best prepare our hearts to come into God’s presence.
One of the themes that the Scriptures touch on consistently is that we belong
to the Lord – we are His people. Not only is that true because
He is the Creator, it is true because He is also our Savior.

(Hebrews 10:15-25 NIV) "The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this.
First he says: 16 "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says
the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds."
17 Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more." 18 And where
these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.

19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter
the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for
us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over
the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance
of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and
having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope
we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur
one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together,
as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the
more as you see the Day approaching."

(2 Corinthians 5:14-17
NIV) "For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced
that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those
who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and
was raised again. 16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view.
Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"

(Romans 12:1-2 NIV)
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies
as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.
2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by
the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's
will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will."

(Hebrews 13:15-16
NIV) "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God
a sacrifice of praise--the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16 And do not forget
to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased."

(Psalms 69:30-31
NIV) "I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and
hoofs."

 (2
Corinthians 8:1-7 NIV) "And now, brothers, we want you to know
about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 Out of the most severe
trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their
ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege
of sharing in this service to the saints. 5 And they did not do as we expected,
but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's
will. 6 So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also
to completion this act of grace on your part. 7 But just as you excel in everything--in
faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us
--see that you also excel in this grace of giving."

(Psalms 100 NIV)
"A psalm. For giving thanks. Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. 2
Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the
LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep
of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures
forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations."

Digging Deeper

1.
Read Romans 12:1-2 again. What does it mean for us to
be “living sacrifices?” What does that look like in the “real
world?” How might the following passages help shed some light
on those questions? Mark 12:28-34; Psalm 40:5-10; Ephesians 5:1-2; Isaiah 58:1-10

2.
Read Genesis 22:1-19. What was the purpose of God’s request
of Abraham? What did God ask Him to do? Was
there anything in Abraham’s life more important than Isaac (note verse 12)?
What was the result of Abraham’s obedience? What lessons do you think Abraham
learned that day? Do you think Abraham thought it was worth it? Why or why not?

3.
What is the most important priority in your life? (Note that the question doesn’t
ask what SHOULD be most important, but rather what IS most important). How
do you know that is most important? Would the people who know you agree with you
that _________ is the most important in your life? Does the way in which you live
your life, the day-to-day decisions you make, reflect that reality? What, if
anything, needs to change? Will it be worth it?

As
we approach P3, our weekend of prayer, fasting and sacrifice, we want
to consider how we ought to pray. Our Lord Jesus calls us to do so,
our Heavenly Father longs to hear from His children, and the Holy
Spirit helps us when we can’t. So how are we to pray?

(Acts
12:1-20 NIV) "It was about this time that King Herod arrested
some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. 2 He
had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. 3 When
he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also.
This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. 4 After arresting
him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four
squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for
public trial after the Passover.

5
So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to
God for him.

6
The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping
between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard
at the entrance. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light
shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up.
"Quick, get up!" he said, and the chains fell off Peter's
wrists. 8 Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and
sandals." And Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and
follow me," the angel told him. 9 Peter followed him out of the
prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really
happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. 10 They passed the
first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the
city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When
they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left
him. 11 Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without
a doubt that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's
clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating."

12
When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother
of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were
praying. 13 Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant girl
named Rhoda came to answer the door. 14 When she recognized Peter's
voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and
exclaimed, "Peter is at the door!" 15 "You're out of
your mind," they told her. When she kept insisting that it was
so, they said, "It must be his angel." 16 But Peter kept on
knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were
astonished. 17 Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and
described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. "Tell
James and the brothers about this," he said, and then he left
for another place.

18
In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to
what had become of Peter. 19 After Herod had a thorough search made
for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and
ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea
and stayed there a while.

he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us
to pray, just as John taught his disciples."

Samuel 2:1-10; John 17:1-12; 1 Kings 8:23-30; Colossians 1:9-18.

Pray in a new and different way. If you normally ask for things,
spend the same amount of time (time it!) thanking God for things. OR
Write/type out your prayer – while we normally pray spontaneously,
writing out a prayer forces you to slow down and really consider how
you are praying. OR Spend a significant amount of time simply
sitting, kneeling or face down before the Lord in silence. Listen
for His voice, His tugging on your heart. Then pray for that person
or thing, or write down what you sense the Holy Spirit is asking of
you. OR make an effort throughout one day to pray for anyone you
notice (co-workers, grocery store clerk, woman in the minivan with
kids, a name in your contacts list, etc).

3.

As we approach P3, our weekend of prayer, fasting and sacrifice, we want to consider how we ought to
pray. Our Lord Jesus calls us to do so, our Heavenly Father longs to hear from His children, and the Holy Spirit helps us when we can’t. So how are we to pray?

(Acts 12:1-20 NIV) "It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church,
intending to persecute them. 2 He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. 3 When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the
Feast of Unleavened Bread. 4 After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the
Passover.

5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
