What's the Plan?

As we begin a new series this morning on marriage it makes sense for us to begin at the beginning. If we are going to experience all that marriage can be, we probably need to understand what marriage is supposed to be! After all, the only way to arrive at a destination is to know what the destination is. So this morning we will examine God’s plan for marriage. What is it supposed to be? What does a great marriage look like? What did God intend marriage to be?

What does a great Marriage look like?
It is a covenant between a man and a woman.

The covenant includes: Leaving, Uniting, Becoming One

Leaving (This is a  word with covenantal implications!)
It involves an end to the parental covenant.
It requires a shift in priorities.
It means you choose to leave behind those things most dear to you.
Uniting
This how and when we formally enter that covenant.
It has the idea of being “glued” together.
    It is a permanent bond.
Becoming One
This refers to goal of marriage.
    It is the “fun stuff”.

What does it mean to “become one”
        The joy of physical union.
It is not good for man to be alone.
        “Helper matching him.”
Someone who never gives up on you.
Someone with whom you can be     “naked, and not ashamed.”
 Why is it so important?
It is an act of obedience.
It requires you to lay aside your rights.
It is one of God’s tools in your life.
It reflects God’s covenant relationship to us.
It forces us back to the power of the cross.

Editors Notes: Prior to the sermon we had a member read todays Scripture. She talked about her marriage and how over the years she had been married to “three men’. This is about her husband and the changes and how he had grown with god. He went from the Man she married, to father, and then to a man who followed the Lord and used his glory to face some challenges he had in his personal life.
